Why you should never let your hosting company register your domain name for you. Even if they will do it free.

I don't know how often the average domain owner changes hosting companies, but the people I know usually don't stay with one host for more than about 2 years.

You should start out by assuming you will someday want to move your domain to a new hosting company. You may find that your hosting company doesn't seem to care about you as much as they did when they were new and needed you. They may go out of business. Or you may just find a better deal somewhere else.

Moving your domain to a new host is easy if you are able to make the needed changes to your DNS information. You just log into your registrar's control panel and put in the correct new information and it's done.

If your hosting company registered your domain for you, you will have to depend on them to make the changes for you. They may be happy to do that. But if you are leaving them because their service has gone bad, or because they have completely gone out of business, you may be unable to get them to make the changes for you.

If they won't do it, you may have to resort to legal action, or perhaps just wait days or weeks (or even months) until they get around to making the change. Not a nice thought.

If you have already allowed your hosting company to register your domain, I suggest you have the domain registration transferred to a domain registration company so you can be in complete control of it yourself.
